What Does Door to Door Service Really Mean

What Does Door to Door Service Really Mean

WHAT DOES DOOR TO DOOR SERVICE REALLY MEAN?

In this industry, you will hear brokers talk about “door to door service”, but what does that really mean to you, the consumer?

This means that the transporter will get as close to your “doorstep” as they can. This is dependent on the transporter’s ability to maneuver on the roads, i.e. can they drive straight through or is there enough room for them to turn around if needs be.  In addition, this also dependent on the size of the transporter being used to do the job.  Carriers come in various sizes. The can be as small as a 2 car hauler (used mostly for local runs) and as large as a 10 car hauler (used mostly for long hauls- coast to coast runs).

Cost is also a factor when you do door to door service. Utilizing this service saves you money.

In the past, when the industry was in its infancy, most people went to terminals to drop off and pick up their vehicles. They were charged an additional fee at both ends on top of the carrier fee.

Once “door to door” was established, consumers saw an immediate cost savings.  Terminals are still in use for those people who either

a)      Have to depart prior to the transporter being able to pick up their vehicles(s) and they have no alternate address or person to handle the initial contact with the trucker

b)      They are unable to be at the delivery point and they have to make alternate arrangements as to payment ( discussion for another article) or

c)       When there is a difficult move which might mean that transport might have to be “split” ( a discussion for yet another article)

If there are situations where the trucker is unable to make it to the door, they will set up alternate pick up and/or drop off points for the convenience of all parties concerned.  In these instances, there are no additional fees/tariffs incurred for this to happen. All in all it works out to be a win/win for both the consumer and the trucker

So, while we all wish that the service is “door to door”, there might be instances that this is not the case.
